Room-acoustic modeling meets Occam’s razor
Modern room-acoustic modeling techniques, from geometrical acoustics to finite element methods, can capture fine details of sound propagation in rooms. Yet even the simplest classical models, such as the image-source method in a shoebox room, already reproduce many essential phenomena with only a few parameters. Also, Sabine’s reverberation formula linked reverberation time to room volume and absorption area and remains a remarkably effective minimal model. This presentation examines how far such low-degree-of-freedom models can go before more complexity becomes necessary. We explore some analytical and statistical approaches that balance simplicity and predictive accuracy in the spirit of Occam’s razor.
